BIO: GUIDELINES FOR LAB REPORT & other DEADLINES

DEAR CLASSMATES, Here are the guidelines for the LABREP and other DEADLINES. Please read and take note of the following:

BIOLOGY: GUIDELINES FOR LAB REPORT

  • Formal Laboratory Report will be considered as 50% of your laboratory grade for this quarter.

  • May be handwritten or computerized.

  • Follow the format stated in the Academic Guide.

  • The title of the laboratory report is the same as the title of the worksheet.

  • You will be making Formal Laboratory Report #1.

  • Use long bond paper, Arial, size 11, 1 1/2 line spacing between lines to provide spaces where the teacher can write her comments/corrections.

  • Avoid using bullets if they are not needed.

  • Have a uniform margin for both sides of the paper (justify the ends of the sentences)

  • Use black ink only.

  • Paraphrase and cite the source of any idea/concept that you got from something/somebody other than yourself.

  • DO NOT JUST COPY AND PASE THINGS FROM THE INTERNET/BOOKS. Use your own words in explaining.

PARTS OF THE LAB REPORT:

Problem (2pts)

  • Should NOT be answerable by yes or no.
  • Clear, SPECIFIC and would take into consideration almost everything that was done in the experiment.
  • Assume that you still don't know what the results would be. It is safe to make a "what" question based on the type of data that you have gathered from the experiment.

Hypothesis (1pt)

  • Make a single statement that serves as a possible answer to your problem. Make it specific.

Observations (2pts)

  • Create four illustrations of the set-ups when they were placed in their respective areas before and after 24 hours (same as the boxes provided in the worksheet)
  • LABEL each part of the set-up and don't forget to add COLOR to show the changes in color of the solutions.
  • You may wish to provide a short paragraph to describe the changes that were observed in the set-ups.

Analysis and Interpretation of Results (5pts)

  • ANALYZE and INTERPRET your results! Research on the scientific explanations for some of the steps done in the experiment as well as reasons that will explain the changes that you have observed. Things to consider for this experiment are the following:
  1. What is the purpose of using bromthymol blue? What type of solution is it?
  2. Why does bromthymol blue change its color? When is it blue? or yellow? or green?
  3. What change did you make in the solution when you blew air into it? What substance was introduced?
  4. What's the purpose of the leaf inside the bottle? What changes did that lead make in the solution?
  5. How are all these things related to the title of the experiment. Photosynthetic Process and Respiration?

Conclusion (1pt)

  • Make a brief, clear and specific statement that would summarize everything and answer the problem that you have stated.

Application (2pts)

  • In what aspect of your daily life can you apply the things that you have learned from the experiment and from the researches that you have done while analyzing your results? Provide at least two, well-explained applications.

References (2pts)

  • Includes the proper citation of any book, journal, website, and other reference material that you have used to make your report.
  • for a book: Author (SURNAME, Initials). Year of publication. Title of the book (italicized). Publisher: Place of publication.
  • for a website: Date accessed: name of website. *note: search engines (yahoo, google), notebook, labsheet, name of teacher/parent are never considered as reference materials.
  • More points are given if you use books/journals than using websites from the Internet alone.

Punctuality (3pts)

  • Lab reports are due one week after the date of the experiment was performed. Extra points will be given for those who submit earlier than the scheduled due date.

Folloing the correct format gives you 2 pts.
